(THE PICTURE IS KENNETH AND SASHA) A British Army dog handler killed in Afghanistan was due to leave
front line duties the day before he died, the Ministry of Defence said.
Lance Corporal Kenneth Rowe and his dog Sasha died in a firefight with the Taliban on Thursday 24th
july in Sangin, Helmand Province.

Another six soldiers were injured.

His commanding officer, Major Stuart McDonald, said he had been due to leave the base on Wednesday.

But he had asked to stay because he was worried about the lack of cover.

"This unselfish action epitomised his professionalism and dedication to his job," he said.

LCpl Rowe, of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, had been attached to 2nd Battalion, The Parachute
Regiment.

He had joined the Army in Newcastle in March 2005 and was sent to Afghanistan three years later.

Major Chris Ham said: "As an Ammunition and Explosives Search Dog Handler, LCpl Rowe was an integral
part of 2 PARA’s capability to conduct effective search operations.

"He died supporting his colleagues in a situation that required his customary composure and
professionalism in handling his dog whilst facing a substantial threat from the enemy.
In doing so he demonstrated all of the spirit, dedication and bravery of both his own unit and the
Company of which he had become an integral part."

Captain Cees Bennett, Veterinary Officer, added: "Ken was the cheeky Geordie who always made you
smile, even when he was annoyingly cheerful in the mornings.

"He took pride in what he did and in becoming better at it; he was already someone who others looked
up to.

"He will be sorely missed as that bright spark in a crowd and as a genuinely good bloke."IF ANY OF

Kenneth, I only had the pleasure of meeting you once properly at your auntie Janns 50th but will never forget you being the life of the party which was typical of you so I’ve heard Ha. I was so scared to meet all of your family but I remember waiting to go and knowing you were going to be there, I was excited because of all the terrific things I had heard about you and you sounded like a bloke I could have a good laugh with but on the other hand was s****ing myself because I have a younger sister and know what it must be like to meet her boyfriend. When I got there you couldn’t have been nicer to me which was such a relief and I thought to myself what a lovely man you were. I will always remember the last words you said to me and they were “look after her”, my promise to you is that I will do everything I can to look after not just her but your whole family to the best I can. I’m truly gutted that was the only time I ever did and ever will have to see and speak to you but I will never forget it as long as I live; I’m honoured to have spoken to such a hero and an excellent bloke. I was so excited for you to get back so me, you and Anth could go for that drink you promised me in the bluey you sent to me and steph. I love steph with all my heart and so much more and would give my last breath for her, I hope you are looking down and approve of me because that would mean so much. You were such an honour to your family, friends and whole country, lived a hero died a hero. You will be sorely missed by all your family and friends and I will be there doing anything I can to help them through this devastating timeand whatever the future holds, it truly was a pleasure meeting you. I hope you are standing tall and proud with the rest of your family that are in heven looking over everyone that loves you.
